Finding Joy in Art during Difficult Times

I watched my grandson during lockdown dealing with being away from his friends and not being able to do all the sport activities he loves so much. He always loved books but now that he can read himself, he can escape into another world of imagination and fantasy which adds another dimension to his life, especially in these times. Art is the same whether it is writing, painting, acting, singing or creating photos. You escape into another world, a world of colour, stories and mystery which can be very enriching for both the creator or the spectator.

Hard times make you go deep in yourself and maybe you can’t even express any of those feelings inside you at that time. But it is there and it will show in your art at some time. I always loved reading myself but now I can also go into the world of mystery with photography and painting. I guess that is why I love abstract so much – it is removed from reality, it is fantasy, it carries a specific mood or energy and that excites me. It does not have to be logical or recognizable as a certain object or vision. It just must have that something you can feel or relate to.

I know we are all different and cope with tough situations differently but that is how I cope. . .even when life is easier. So it is important to find joy in art – whichever art you like and allow it to make you escape at times. . .at least for a while!
